REFERENCE & TIPS

Keeping track of the jargon used in the audio and video industry can be confusing when looking into services for your event. Here are some of the most commonly seen terms:

ANSI LUMENS

Also know as "lumens" for short, this measures the brightness of a video display's output or the brightness reflected from a screen. For small office meetings in a low light condition you should use 2500 lumens or higher and for large scale projection in a bright environment you should use 4500 lumens or higher.

PINSPOTS

Narrow and concentrated beams of light are used to highlight objects of interest in the room such as centerpieces, the cake table, sweetheart table, place cards, guestbook area, floral arrangements, and art.

DECIBEL

This is the unit used to express amplitude levels. Basically, this measures how loud something is. This is what you will want to look at to determine a speaker's output as opposed to its wattage.

DISPERSION

This is the pattern of sound coverage for a loudspeaker. Knowing this will help you plan your seating arrangement or the speaker setup so that everyone enjoys clear audio.

FRONT PROJECTION

This is the most common form of projection. A projector casts an image onto the front of a screen. This is used when there is suitable space in front of the screen to place the projector or when the screen is flush against a wall.

REAR PROJECTION

This is when a projector casts an image onto the back of a screen. This is used when there is not enough space in front of a screen for the projector and is the preferred method when there is available space behind a screen.

Audio/Video Tips

- Always supply your A/V provider with the floorplan for an event space so that they can offer you insight into what you may need. If you have a live performer, always ask them for a "rider" which is a document outlining their needs.
- Hire a professional! Professionals know what works and what does not when it comes to providing the audio/video for an event. The presentation of your event reflects the professionalism of you or your company, and setting equipment up correctly and gaffing cable properly are needed to avoid hazards and injury to your guests and the venue.
- If you have videos or audio files that will be used in your presentation, always supply them to your A/V provider so that they can be tested for compatibility, clarity, and other factors. You don't want to discover an issue during the event!
